In February, our family went on a roadtrip to MT, to visit with family and see some beautiful country. This photo (above) is looking east from McDonald pass, and in the distance where the rainbow is descending – is Mt. Helena, where we spend some time hiking and running around.

We were surprised to see some signs of spring the first week of February in Montana.. We took our time on the drive to pull over and watch herds of Antelope, all sorts of hawks, and we even saw a handful of eagles in Eastern Montana. We stopped in little towns along the way, and spoke with locals who inspired us and made us contemplate what life will be like for us in a few short years..

Our first wake up at mom and dad’s was surprising as well! We thought that we must have brought the fog from Washington. This is the very spot that we were married.. And our wedding photos remind us of how lush and green and full of foliage this land will be in a few short months..

It seems we’re taking the scenic route through my mind.. I couldn’t stop when I started going through old pictures.. These are another reminder of how special mom and dad’s is to us. Every time we pull in, it’s happy feel good feelings, for many reasons.. Our wedding – a pretty big one!
Throughout the day, the fog lifted – and we spent the next few days at mom and dad’s exploring their property.. It is really fun to go out and see the horses and the cows. The kids have a blast, and we do too.

This is Jess, a perfect farm dog, in my opinion. She lives outside all year round, catches mice, eats lots of bones, plays Frisbe, poses for her portrait, chases cats – and taught our Tovah to do the same! (Sorry mom)

We could easily make an entire post out of these beautiful photos of McKenna, but here are just a few of our favorites..! I am very proud of these moments.

Donuts.. This is a family tradition that I’m so happy to have married into. Grandma Irene has her own recipe, and Ty’s mom (and her mom) each have their own recipes. The batter is made the day before hand and the matter of rolling out the dough, frying them up, and letting them sit takes the better part of the day – It’s definitely a family effort. I think we ended up with about 300…! They are sooo delicious.

And with the only photo I’ll share of this experience, we also butchered two whole beefs this year. We are soo appreciate to have beef back in the deep freeze.

I love seeing our kids affection for grandparents, I actually feel relieved. We live so far away and don’t see half as much of each other as we’d like. So it’s nice to see that all the good stuff is still happening.

And with that our week was coming to a close.. Grandma, Linsey, Grace, McKenna and Luke, were all heading back home to North Dakota. Our family ended up staying for an extra day.. After a few hours of moping around because the house felt so empty, we went for a drive with Ty’s dad. He works closely with farmers and ranchers, and with that comes a lot of knowledge about this land. He took us to some beautiful places only miles from home, we learned the history of the land and saw some mystifying wildlife in the snow covered hills..

Lastly, we had a quick stop to visit Evelyn Cameron, a pioneer photographer in Prairie County in the late 1800’s. She’s famous around these parts, and it’s pretty neat to learn about local history through her eyes.

And then we were off.. Goodbyes to our family and to the great state of Montana. A quick stop in Missoula, and then back to our home sweet home, for now!
